Overview
Chavand Fort, also known as Prasannagad, is a historic hill fort located in the Sahyadri mountain range near Junnar in Pune district, Maharashtra. Situated at an elevation of approximately 3,400 feet (1,036 meters) above sea level, it is part of the renowned "Famous Five" forts, which include Hadsar, Shivneri, Jivdhan, and Naneghat.
Chavand Fort boasts a rich history spanning over 800 years. It was initially acquired by the founder of the Nizam Shahi dynasty, Nizam Ahmed, after the dissolution of the Bahmanid Empire. In 1594, Bahadur Shah's grandson was imprisoned here. Later, in 1636, the fort came under Mughal control through a treaty with the Nizams. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj renamed it "Prasannagad" during his reign. The British captured the fort on May 1, 1818, and subsequently destroyed many of its structures, including the original steps.
